About Grains

Grains is a micro-journal app — your life, one grain at a time. Write a single sentence each day and watch your grains accumulate in a beautiful jar. Tap any date to see what you wrote on that day across different years.

Common Questions

Why only one sentence? — The constraint is the feature. It removes the biggest barrier to journaling ("what do I write?") and forces you to distill your day into what matters most. One line is fast, sustainable, and builds a meaningful archive over time.
What are the entry modes? — Free Entry lets you write one open-ended sentence. Highs & Lows gives you two fields — one for your high and one for your low. You can switch modes anytime without losing existing entries.
What is the Year-over-Year view? — Tap any date to see all your entries for that date across different years, stacked vertically. It's the feature that makes Grains special at day 365 and beyond.
What is the jar? — A visual representation of your entries as sand grains. Each time you save an entry, a new grain drops into the jar. As you reach milestones, you unlock new jar shapes and sand color themes.
What are Tides? — Tides replace traditional streaks. A waterline rises with consistency but never punishes gaps. Missing one day does nothing; the line slowly recedes only after 7+ days of inactivity. No guilt mechanics.
What milestones can I reach? — Milestones are based on total grains: 7 (A Handful), 30 (A Palmful), 100 (A Mound), 365 (A Year of Sand), 500 (Half a Thousand), and 1000 (A Dune). Each unlocks new features like jar shapes and themes.
Can I export my journal? — Yes, you can export your entries as PDF, plain text, or JSON.
Is my data private? — All data is stored on your device. You can lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID. iCloud sync is optional and stores data in your personal iCloud account, not on our servers.
Does Grains work offline? — Yes, entirely. iCloud sync is optional. The app works perfectly without an internet connection.
